INTRODUCTION

The St Helens Safeguarding Children Board was established in April 2006, when it replaced the previous Area Child Protection Committee. It has been given - by law - many new responsibilities and duties towards the children, young people, and families of St Helens, and this website has been launched to make sure that as many people as possible know what the Board is doing, and how it is carrying out those responsibilities.

We are now not only focussing on the crucial, but relatively small, area of child abuse and neglect, but we are also concerned with the overall safety and welfare of all our children and young people across the borough. This means ensuring that they are kept safe not only in their own homes and at school, but also when they are out and about in St Helens – on the roads, in our parks, or when they are using our leisure facilities.

Many individuals and agencies across the borough, including in the voluntary and community sectors, are working very hard to ensure that the protection of our children and young people from harm, and the support we give them through to adulthood, remains at the top of our priorities. This website, as it develops over the coming months and years, will demonstrate how we are seeking to achieve this in St Helens.
